Artist Gunter Demnig commemorates the 50th anniversary of the deportation of Sinti and Roma in May 1940 with a high-profile art project. Using a specially constructed ‘trail apparatus’, he stamps the words ‘May 1940—1000 Roma and Sinti’ in white paint thousands of times on pavements and roadways in Cologne, Germany. Demnig’s interest in the persecution of Sinti and Roma inspires him to develop the STOLPERSTEINE project.
