In Cologne, Germany, artist Gunter Demnig lays the first STOLPERSTEINE in an act of civil disobedience. The stone blocks bear inscriptions engraved on brass plates and are dedicated to Sinti and Roma who were deported from Cologne in 1940 or 1943.
