On the occasion of the 60th anniversary, an event organised by the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma in Berlin, Germany, commemorates an ‘uprising’ which, according to a former Polish political prisoner, took place on 16 May 1944 in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. The memorial event is attended by 800 guests from many countries, including numerous survivors and speakers such as the Federal President Johannes Rau, Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and former Polish Foreign Minister Władysław Bartoszewski.
