Lemma A–Z

Roma from Burgenland in Dachau concentration camp, Germany, July 1938. Stefan Hodosy (2nd from right) and Ignaz Horvath (right) from St. Margarethen, Austria, were identified by their prisoner numbers. They were among the 232 Roma from Burgenland who were sent to the camp on 25 June 1938 and housed in Block 10. Stefan Hodosy (born 1911) was transferred to Vienna in October 1941, no further details are known. Ignaz Horvath (born 1912) was liberated in the Mauthausen concentration camp.

The photograph is part of a series taken by a Munich photographer in Dachau in the summer of 1938. With this presumably staged scene, the photographer conveys the supposed discipline and order in Nazi concentration camps from a superior perspective. For the prisoners, however, the camp system was characterised by terroristic violence.
