Memorial to the Sinti and Roma murdered under National Socialism, Buchenwald Memorial, 2012. The photograph shows a section of the memorial on the site of Block 14 in the former camp grounds. It was erected on the initiative of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and inaugurated on the occasion of the anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp on 8 April 1995.
Approximately 3,500 to 4,000 Sinti and Roma had been deported to this camp since 1938. In September 1939, at least 570 Roma from the Austrian province of Burgenland were housed in blocks 14 and 15. Almost half of these prisoners did not survive.
The memorial consists of 100 black basalt steles standing on black gravel. Eighteen of these steles bear the names of other concentration and extermination camps where Sinti and Roma were murdered. The dedication text, written in German, English and Romanes, reads: ‘In memory of the Sinti and Roma who were victims of the Nazi genocide.’
