The Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany—the constitution of the new democratic state—is promulgated. In contrast to the criminal Nazi regime, Articles 1 to 19 set out the rights to which every human being is entitled. Article 1, paragraph 1 states: ‘Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.’
