In the Litzmannstadt ghetto, around January/February 1942. The buckets, jugs and bowls are remnants from an area in the ghetto where 5,007 Roma from Burgenland, Austria, had been deported from 5 to 9 November 1941. More than half of them, 2,689 people, were children. After several hundred people had already died due to the overcrowded facilities, miserable sanitary conditions and poor care, the rest were murdered in December 1941 and January 1942 in Kulmhof extermination camp. None of the deportees survived.
The photograph is part of a series with which Jewish prisoners of the ghetto documented the conditions in the ghetto.
