Jasenovac memorial site, Croatia, September 2015. On view is the ‘Stone Flower’, created by Yugoslav architect and sculptor Bogdan Bogdanović (1922–2010) as a central monument on the former site of the Jasenovac concentration camp. Remains of the camp had almost completely ruined by 1959. From 1959 to 1966, the camp site was remodelled into a concentration camp memorial.
Jasenovac was the largest and most important camp complex of the fascist Independent State of Croatia. Among the approximately 90,000 mostly Serbian victims of the camp complex were a large number of Jews and Roma. The memorial has so far identified 16,173 Roma among the victims by name (as of December 2021).
