Lemma A–Z

Christine Lehmann with her children Egon Karl (left) and Robert Georg, 1942. Due to the ‘Nuremberg Laws’, Christine Lehmann was forbidden to marry the children’s father. Christine Lehmann was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in July 1943 and murdered there. She and the children’s father had tried in vain to save the children. Robert Georg Lehmann was picked up from Luxembourg by the Duisburg criminal investigation department in February 1944 and was also deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau together with his brother shortly afterwards. They did not survive either.

The photograph is the last testimony of mother and sons. It was sent to a relative in September 1942 and bears the inscription ‘Take good care of the 2 tschawe [Romanes: children].’
